We pride ourselves on employing some of the best outdoor instructors and facilitators in the country. We have a staff of highly qualified and motivated people so that every activity is suitably planned, run & supervised. All our staff have years of experience working with crime diversion projects, residential care and after care groups, addiction services and the prison service. In addition all our staff are remote first aid trained, all have Garda clearance and all have been trained in best practice when working with young and vulnerable people.
Willie Whelan: Willie has been involved in outdoor activities since he was a child, and got involved in instructing in 2001. over the years he has gained a huge amount of experience working for various youth services providing adventure activities for a wide range of youth and school groups. In addition to this he worked for the Irish Canoe Union as a kayak coach teaching young people and adult groups. Most recently he has been employed as a lecturer in outdoor adventure management in a third level college in Dublin. He is a qualified mountain leader and a rock climbing leader as well as a recognized provider of official Mountain Skills courses. Willie is also a lifeguard, snorkeling instructor and white water kayak coach as well as a white water rescue technician. He has also a qualified coasteering instructor. Willie also holds an Honors Degree in Adventure Education and Facilitation from the University of Chichester and is registered as a teacher with the Irish teaching council. He has completed therapeutic crisis intervention training and has a QQI level 6 in counselling and psychotherapy.
Sara Mason: Sara has been working in the outdoor industry since 2006. She is mountain leader trained, rock climbing instructor, Kayak instructor, sailing and powerboat instructor. She is also a white water rescue technician and has completed coasteering skills and rescue training. Sara is our resident kiwi having come to Ireland to study outdoor education at third level where she was awarded a HND in Outdoor Adventure Management. She brought from NZ a different perspective on outdoor education which is very client centred. She has huge experience working with clients with behavioural difficulties and young people in residential care. Sara is hugely enthusiastic about the benefits of outdoor education and is really keen to pass on her love of adventure to others.
Daniel Mc Evoy: Dan is a qualified single pitch rock climbing instructor, lifeguard and snorkeling instructor, kayak instructor and mountain leader. He is also a qualified white water rescue technician and a coasteering instructor. He is our survival skills specialist having spent some time in America teaching and gaining experience in this regard. He also has a huge amount of experience working with Garda diversion projects and youth groups and also gained valuable experience working in Crosscare’s homeless and addiction services. He also has completed Therapeutic crisis intervention and ASSIST training. At the moment he is adding to his knowledge by doing a course in addiction studies at Level 7
Craig Byrne : Craig is our newest staff member and joined us in 2015. He spent 2 years after college travelling and working in various outdoor jobs around the world including raft guiding in India. He has a HND in outdoor adventure management and is a white water kayak instructor. He is also a white water rescue technician and has completed coasteering skills and rescue training. He also is a trainee mountain leader and rock climbing instructor 2 awards that he is working hard to achieve. At the moment he is studying counselling and psychotherapy to gain a better understanding and to improve his practice.
Darragh Carroll : Darragh has been working in the outdoor scene since 2002. He holds the Level 4 kayak instructor, Mountain Leader, rock climbing instructor and Canadian Snowboard instructor awards to name just a few. After spending a few years working abroad in New Zealand and Canada teaching and guiding in the outdoors, Darragh is back home to work with us, passing on his passion for the outdoors. Darragh has worked with crosscare with their adventure groups, with the Irish Canoe Union on adult and young people’s courses and teaching the instructors of the future in St Kevin’s College outdoor course.
Olivia Shaw: Olivia came to us from the USA where she was working in the outdoor industry for over 7 years. Olivia is a ski instructor and a commercial zip line guide. She also has a degree in psychology and has a ton of experience working in an outdoor education environment with a wide variety of clients. Olivia has a different perception on the way experiential education works best and when she joined us at Outdoor Education Ireland she made us think about how we do things here. Olivia is now happy to call Dublin her home.
